How Many Types of Resistance Bands are There?

There are a ton of different options when it comes to resistance bands.  You can find a set for any type of workout.  In general, they usually come in light, medium, heavy and extra heavy.  They have different types such as Loop Bands, Tube Bands, Mini Bands & Figure 8 Bands.

Are Resistance Bands a Good Workout?

Some studies show that you can have a better workout with a resistance band than you can with free weights.  They are a highly effective tool for building strength, stability, and mobility.  Compared to free weights, using a band for workouts, your muscles are always under tension.  You can build as much muscle with bands as you can with free weights.  It’s a good idea to have a few different sizes for different types of workouts.  Below we will discuss the different types and benefits each band can give you.

Loop Bands

Loop bands are a longer flat band usually made of latex that comes in multiple sizes.  Most loop bands are usually color-coded varying on the amount of resistance.  The range of resistance will be from 10 – 30lbs.  These can be used to do full body workouts or target a specific muscle group.  There are many benefits when using loop bands.  Most people like how inexpensive they are compared to buying your own weights or a gym membership.  Some believe that you have greater muscle stimulus.  They are so versatile you can do almost any workout with just a few bands.

Tube Bands

Tube bands are made from latex-based elastic that have grip handles at both ends.  Like loop bands these come in different sizes and colors.  The weight resistance will usually be between 10-60lbs.  With tube bands you can anchor them to any door.  You can anchor high or low on the door depending on what type of workout you are doing.  Anchor the tube band low if you want to do bent-over rows, lateral raises, overhead presses, bicep curls and may more exercises.  Anchor it high for triceps, lat pulldowns and ab work.

Mini Bands are made from latex or synthetic rubber.  They also come in different sizes and colors.  These bands are usually used for stability in the upper and lower body.  Mini bands range from 5-35lbs.  For lower body they are ideal for lateral movement for hip and glute activation.  For example, put the band around both ankles and step side to side.  For upper body, place the band around your wrists, slightly push outward and lift your hands above your head.  This is great for shoulder activation.  These are just a couple examples.  There are many exercises you can do.

Figure 8 Bands

Figure 8 Bands are usually made from premium natural latex.  They get their name from their shape.  They come with a grip handles on both ends and are around 14-16 inches long.  The resistance weight can vary from 8-20lbs.  The figure 8 resistance bands are good for body stretching, physical therapy, resistance training, yoga and helps to strengthen torn ligaments.
